llms.txt
llms.txt is a proposed text file that lists your site's content for AI crawlers. Some tools sell it as an AI visibility fix. The evidence does not back that up.
What it is
A markdown file at the root of a domain that summarises the site and links its main pages, proposed as a way to help language models read a site. No major assistant has said it reads the file. An Ahrefs study of 137,000 sites found that 97% of llms.txt files were never requested by any crawler, and Google's John Mueller compared the idea to the keywords meta tag, which search engines stopped reading years ago.
What to do instead
AI shopping assistants read structured product data, feeds and Schema.org markup. Complete those, allow the crawlers in robots.txt, and you can leave the file out without losing anything.
