ChatGPT Shopping in the UK: what a UK retailer can do now

ChatGPT Shopping is open to shoppers in the UK: OpenAI's help centre states no country restriction on the product results, and OpenAI said in March 2026 they were rolling out to all free, Go, Plus and Pro users. The restrictions are on the merchant side, so as of October 2026 a UK retailer reaches ChatGPT mainly through product pages its crawler can read, and that is where the work is.

In short

  • UK shoppers see ChatGPT's product results; OpenAI describes them as available in ChatGPT on mobile and web with no country list.
  • The Shopify route needs a store that sells to United States customers, and a direct feed, open to approved partners, targets the United States unless OpenAI confirms more markets.
  • OAI-SearchBot has no country condition, and Profound's June 2026 sample traced 87.3 percent of product cards to web crawl, so the product page is a UK retailer's route.
  • OpenAI has stepped back from in-ChatGPT checkout to focus on product discovery, so every sale lands on your own site, in pounds, under your own terms.

Can shoppers in the UK see ChatGPT Shopping results?

OpenAI's help centre sets no country limit on ChatGPT's product results: it describes the feature as available in ChatGPT on mobile and web, with no country list, and its announcement of 24 March 2026 said the richer, visual version was rolling out to all free, Go, Plus and Pro users that week. The shopper side is open, then, and the question for a UK retailer is which of the three merchant routes carries its products there.

Advertising is a separate matter. OpenAI's August 2026 ads update says ChatGPT Ads is available in over 40 countries and that self-service buying opened across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and India that day, and its help centre says ads are separate from the product results. This guide is about those organic results, which cannot be bought.

Route 1: Shopify Catalog, if the store sells to the United States

Shopify's requirement is about the market served rather than where the business sits: the store must sell to customers in the United States, and Shopify says it can be based outside the United States. For a UK store that means the United States must be a market it sells to, and the usual rules on top:

  • Terms of service, privacy and return policies completed under Settings, Policies.
  • The Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms agreed.
  • The Starter plan or higher, no password protection, and no B2B-only setting.

Once eligible, the ChatGPT channel is on by default, the customer checks out on your own store, and Shopify charges nothing beyond payment processing. The requirements checklist has the full list for the store and for each product.

A UK store that sells only to UK customers does not meet this rule, and Shopify Catalog does not carry its products into ChatGPT. The admin gives the verdict under Sales channels, Agentic, where the Shopify Catalog source shows a product count or an Ineligible reason. Whether to open a US market for the sake of the channel is a commercial decision, since it means honouring US orders, and the third route below reaches ChatGPT without it.

Route 2: a direct feed targets the United States for now

OpenAI's feed specification carries a store_country column for where the seller's store is located and a target_countries column for where it sells. As of October 2026, though, a standard upload targets the United States regardless of either, target_countries currently represents US, CA and MX, and additional markets become available only after OpenAI confirms your integration and its allowed countries and currencies. Prices go in the currency agreed for your feed, and the currency does not select a market.

Feed access itself is narrow: OpenAI's getting-started guide says onboarding product feeds is currently available to approved partners, who apply at chatgpt.com/merchants and upload over SFTP, with a full snapshot at least once a day as OpenAI recommends. For a UK retailer that is not one of them, the feed is not a route today. For one that is, it is an instrument for the US market until OpenAI confirms the UK for that integration.

Route 3: the crawler reads a UK product page like any other

The route with no country condition is OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's crawler documentation sets one rule: a site that opts out of OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt is not shown in ChatGPT search answers, only as a navigational link, and a change takes about 24 hours to register. It says nothing about geography.

Profound's analysis of 812,190 product cards shown between 18 and 25 June 2026 put 87.3 percent of them down to web crawl and 12.7 percent to direct merchant feeds, so for most of the products ChatGPT showed, the product page was already the record it read.

For a UK retailer with no US market and no partner feed, this is the whole route, which makes the product page do two jobs at once: be reachable, and state the facts a conversational request turns on. OpenAI names structured metadata such as price and product description among the inputs it weighs, and says the prices and shipping terms it receives from providers can lag when a merchant changes them, so the page, its structured data and any feed should agree with each other.

Sighted's own evidence on what those facts need to be comes from SO-ME, the consumer shopping platform it powers, which receives product feeds from retailers including ASOS, REVOLVE, Vinted, M&S, New Look, Debenhams and EGO. Two things stand out in those feeds. The same kind of product arrives with different attributes and under different categories from one retailer to the next. And a conversational request differs from a keyword search, so matching it to the product information a feed carries is difficult.

Conversational discovery needs deeper product information than keyword search asked for, and that is as true of a product page ChatGPT crawls as of a feed SO-ME receives.

Checkout: deprioritised, which leaves the sale with you

In-ChatGPT checkout is not where OpenAI's effort is going. OpenAI's March 2026 post says the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the flexibility OpenAI aspired to, that merchants may now use their own checkout experiences while OpenAI focuses on product discovery, and that merchants who want a native experience can build a ChatGPT app, as Walmart did. Shopify's page says the same for its stores: ChatGPT is a discovery channel and the customer is sent to your checkout.

The glossary entry on the Agentic Commerce Protocol records what the protocol still covers.

The practical consequence is that every ChatGPT-sourced sale lands on your own site, in your own currency, under your own delivery and returns terms. That is the funnel the agentic commerce guide describes for UK retailers, where discovery has arrived ahead of the transaction layer, and the measurement guide shows where those visits appear in GA4.

Questions retailers ask

Is ChatGPT Shopping available in the UK?

For shoppers, OpenAI's help centre states no country restriction on the product results, which it says are available in ChatGPT on mobile and web. For merchants, the Shopify route needs a store that sells to US customers, direct feeds are for approved partners and target the US, and the crawl route is open to any site that allows OAI-SearchBot.

Do you need a US company to be listed?

No published rule asks for one. Shopify's condition is selling to US customers from a store that can be based outside the United States, and OpenAI's crawler reads any page it is allowed to read.

Will Instant Checkout come to the UK?

OpenAI said in March 2026 that it is letting merchants use their own checkout while it focuses on product discovery, and its post gives no plan for the UK or anywhere else. Treat checkout as your own site's job.

Does pricing in pounds matter?

OpenAI says ChatGPT shows the prices it receives from providers, and its help centre describes no conversion. In a direct feed the currency is agreed with OpenAI and does not choose the market.

What a UK retailer can do now

In Sighted's pilot with The Game Collection, Sighted enriched 200 products and created 17 collections, and over the pilot AI citation coverage went from 0% to 32% of the priority products tested while the organic conversion rate rose 64%. The work there was in the products and the collections, which any UK store can do without a US market. In order:

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and through the firewall, and check it again after any site or CDN change; this is the route with no country condition.
  2. Decide on the US market: if the store already ships there, complete Shopify's policies and terms so Shopify Catalog carries the products; if it does not, do not open one for the channel alone.
  3. Make every product page state the facts a request turns on, in crawlable text and in the structured data: material, fit, dimensions, compatibility, what is included, delivery and returns.
  4. Keep price and availability identical across the page, the markup and any feed, in pounds, with the currency stated.
  5. Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, without your brand name, from a UK account, and record each month which stores it names.
  6. If you are an approved OpenAI partner, send the feed with store_country set to GB and the return policy filled, and ask OpenAI which markets your integration is confirmed for.

What Sighted does for a UK store

Sighted is built around the route every UK store has. The free AI visibility audit reads your robots.txt and reports which AI crawlers it allows, OAI-SearchBot among them, then reads up to 50 product pages for the structured data, title, description, price, availability, variants and photos a crawler would find.

Inside the product, Sighted writes the attributes each product's category needs from your own descriptions, options and photos, in your voice and only from facts it can find, for you to approve. On Shopify the approved values are written back into the product's fields and category attributes, so they reach Shopify Catalog as soon as the store qualifies.

The same records build the Merchant Center feed and, for approved OpenAI partners, the ChatGPT Shopping feed with its store country and return policy columns. It is the technology behind SO-ME, built for the kind of request a shopper types rather than the keywords a search box gets.
