The ChatGPT Shopping product feed, field by field
ChatGPT reads products from a merchant's feed and from product pages its crawler has reached. This page is the feed: the routes it travels, the columns it needs, and what to fill first. How ChatGPT chooses between the products it can read is the guide under Read next.
The three routes a product takes
A Shopify store's products reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, from the fields the store already holds. An approved partner sends OpenAI a feed file, in Google's Merchant Center format unchanged if it likes, and since June 2026 manages it in ChatGPT Ads Manager, where a setting keeps the feed in the organic results. And OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, reads product pages on the open web. Organic placement cannot be bought, which cuts both ways: a competitor with better data will beat you with it.
What the feed needs
OpenAI's specification takes one row per purchasable variant: an id, title, description, URL and image; price and availability; condition, brand and a GTIN or MPN; a product category; and the attributes shoppers ask for, which are colour, size, material, gender and age group. Questions and answers can ride along in a q_and_a column. An approved partner uploads the file as a full snapshot at least once a day.
On Shopify, Shopify Catalog already carries your products to ChatGPT. That handles delivery. It does nothing for a product whose material is empty; the gap travels with it.
What to do
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Fill the attribute columns for every product, with colour as a standard value rather than your own shade name. Put the same facts in the Schema.org markup on each product page so the crawler and the feed tell the same story.
What Sighted does
Sighted scores every product on those columns and writes the missing ones from your own descriptions, options and photos, in your brand voice, then waits for you to approve each rewrite, unless you switch on automatic publishing. On Shopify, approved values go into the product's own fields and category attributes, which is what Shopify Catalog passes on. The same data builds a Merchant Center feed in Google's format, one item per variant, which OpenAI accepts from approved partners, a file to OpenAI's own specification for partners who want it, and your pages' structured data, all rebuilt after each enrichment run. Weekly on Pro and monthly on Growth, Sighted asks ChatGPT a set of real shopper questions about the kind of products you sell and records whether your store is named.
