Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard for an AI agent to discover a store, search its catalogue and, where the store allows it, check out.
How UCP works
A store publishes a profile at /.well-known/ucp on its own domain that tells an agent which capabilities it supports and where to reach its catalogue. Google's AI Mode and Gemini, Shopify, Microsoft and Anthropic's commerce agents build on it. Every Shopify store publishes a profile by default, pointing agents at Shopify's catalogue search for that store, so a Shopify merchant is on UCP without doing anything.
Whether you need it
On Shopify you already have it. Elsewhere, as of October 2026 Google's Merchant Center help says the checkout UCP enables in AI Mode and Gemini applies to products eligible in the United States, Canada and Australia, for participating merchants, and Google has said the UK comes later, with no date. Either way, what an agent finds through UCP is only as good as the product data behind it: titles, options, prices, stock and category attributes. Completing that data is the work that pays off first, in UCP and in every channel you already have.
What Sighted does
Sighted's free scan reads the UCP profile your store publishes at /.well-known/ucp, the way an agent would, and reports what it finds. On a Shopify store, Sighted fills the product fields and category attributes that UCP catalogue search returns, from your own data and on your approval.
